There are a number of key elements to the LGA's member structure including the LGA General Assembly which meets twice a year and acts as the "parliament" for local government.
The General Assembly meet annually, immediately before the opening of the LGA's Annual Conference. It can however, hold additional meetings, as business needs require it to.
The General Assembly has in its remit:
- electing the President and Vice-Presidents of the Association;
- electing the Chairman/Vice-Chairman/Deputy Chairman;
- receiving the Annual Accounts;
- hearing the Chairman's report to General Assembly;
- debating issues of national importance to local government.
Every member authority of the LGA is entitled to appoint one councillor to the General Assembly. Where an authority is entitled to more than one vote on the General Assembly, it can appoint further councillors to a total equal to its number of votes, or four, whichever is the lesser.
